This was one of my favorite books as a child. Along with Where The Red Fern Grows. Wanted to make sure my son had a chance to read it since it isn't required reading at school. Beautifully written and pulls at the heart strings.Tags : Sounder [William H Armstrong, James Barkley] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. This powerful Newbery-winning classic tells the story of the great coon dog Sounder and his family. An African American boy and his family rarely have enough to eat. I got this book, along with a couple of others for my 10 year old grandson. He was thrilled to get books for Christmas! This book was recommended by his uncle. ( my son) to me, as he had read it in grade school and liked it!
Great book, every kid in school should have to read this to understand the life of a black sharecroppers family after the Civil War.
Purchased for myself. I saw the movie, but wanted to own a piece of African American history.
I liked the book a lot - it is a touching although heartbreaking story. My 8 year old son, for whom I bought the book, was not crazy about it. I think the story might be a little depressing for young children. I watched the movie after reading the book - the book is much better than the movie.
This is a sad tale. An easy and quick book to read. It makes it easy to sympathize with the poor in the South back then. My heart ached for the boy and the dog.
I use this in my 5th grade classroom while we read along in the book. The narration is perfect. It's Avery Brooks, the actor who played Hawk on "Spencer for Hire." The kids love it.
William H. Armstrong's novel is a classic for the ages.
With masterful writing, he tells the story of a poor family as they face injustice and struggle to survive and to overcome.
I recommend this novel to thoughtful, discerning readers of all ages.
