Word Play by Amalie Silver had me in stitches as I read this incredible story. I actually was traveling home on a plane and I had to keep reminding myself where I was, because my bursts of laughter kept erupting from me. This is a satire on the world of Romance writing. The person next to me on the plane actually asked me what I was reading to get the reaction I had.In this book Author Michael Rourke has hit a wall with his career in writing mysteries. The truth of the matter is, Smut sells. It's as simple as that. The only problem is that once you become an overnight success in the business, you have to produce more. When he is forced to make a public appearance as his Pen Name Christoph Strong, his world as he know it crumbles. No longer is his quiet life a viable option.
Monica Singer is an infamous blogger. She is determined to get to the bottom of who is Christoph Strong. The chemistry between the two of them is off the charts. But once lines are crossed, all bets are off!
I am completely new to Amalie Silver, but this will not be the last I read from her. I loved how she created these memorable characters that stuck with me long after the book was finished. The world she built was one I would want to live in! Her sense of humor and ability to capture my heart was incredible. I can't wait to read more from this incredibly talented author!

I didn't care for the derision of the male author toward erotica/romance authors. We get enough of that IRL we DON'T need that in books. SERIOUSLY. That was my least favourite part of this book. That and the whole "writing romance/erotica will make my writing less valid as a mystery writer" bull. Because once you write romance and/or erotica you're now not a valid writer of anything else...or some other stupid sexist bull like that. Because we all know that romance and erotica authors are just vapid and shallow and can't write anything that makes us think.
The Monica's Musings stuff was kind of unnecessary and didn't really add much to the story. I felt like that could have been cut out and nothing would have been lost from the story. The main character was borderline alcoholic. And overall it was a decent story with a lot of fluff for filler. Some of which felt like it was there just to pad out the word count (ie Monica's Musings). Decent story.
Wordplay has been on my TBR for a while now, something about the whole idea of a romantic parody just kind of calls to me in general because I don’t really read a ton of romance. So I’m glad to say that it really managed to live up to my expectations. It’s both funny and charming and proved to be a rather fun book.
Michael Rourke is a struggling mystery writer and Christoph Strong is a highly sought after erotica author, and they are the same person. I love this dual side to Michael, and it’s kind of hilarious watching him try to figure out just how to be someone like the man he writes about. He’s suave and self-sure, but he’s also sweating bullets and in over his head. We get a similar situation with Monica Singer, who hides behind a pen name and struggles to share who she really is with Christoph. We get a whole handful of tropes in this one and they all lead to a rather ridiculous situation that is equal parts hilarious and kind of cute. We have mistaken identity, alpha male, the love to hate troupe, and even a bit of the reunion romance going on. I think if you go into the novel knowing that this is a parody and that ‘yes it is ridiculous’ you’ll enjoy it quite a bit. There are a lot of laugh out loud moments in Wordplay as Michael struggles with his new fame, and as he trades jabs with Monica. Their romance is pretty steamy, but it’s also a slow burn and takes awhile before all those pesky misunderstandings work themselves out. One of the side characters that I can’t get enough of is Jeffrey…He’s sort of a parody himself as he embodies the ‘gay best friend’ role but even with that in mind I still want a friend like him. He’s supportive and as subtle as an air horn, which is just perfect.
One my favorite things about this one was the sort of tongue in cheek jabs at the reading community as a whole. Everyone who reads or writes blogs knows that it can get kind of crazy and that there are so many ridiculous people that pop up on occasion, and Wordplay totally touches on that. It’s not mean spirited and there are moments where we get to see some focus on the side of the community that really does love their hobby and works their butt off for it no matter what.
