I just couldn't keep going with this one. I have tried Lorret's writing in the past and didn't connect even though I always am intrigued by the book blurbs and the covers so I decided to try Book 1 of the new series. I am sad to report that I still don't click with this author. I am stopping this book at 33% because I don't care what happens next and I won't be picking up another story by this author.

There were three things that were a major turn-off for me:
1. There is an extended analogy with spiders. I like bugs and nature too, but that doesn't mean I will pick up a large garden spider with my bare hand or cry if one of them dies...too weird even for me.
2. The heroine has no self-esteem and I mean ZERO. She is always doubting herself and pushing away the one man that actually notices her. It is pathetic.
3. There were two weird themes in this novel. One was "The Season's Original" and the other was the Duke of Vale's "Marriage Formula." I didn't care for the implications of either one and since they both played a major role in the story, I started to lose interest in the plot.

I think this is a situation of it's not the author, it's me. The writing style wasn't bad, it just didn't work for me and I wasn't interested in the plot devices that were used. The hero was cynical, but very observant and I actually liked him, but all the other characters and themes fell flat for me.

The Debutante is Mine is a really entertaining Regency story. Regencies always have a handsome, sophisticated hero who is conquered by a shy, beautiful heroine, and Jack and Lilah are very appealing characters in this mold. As much as I enjoyed this story, I guess I'm old enough to find myself skipping pages when we're invited into a very descriptive bedroom scene. I know the characters are fictitious, but it seems pornographic and voyeuristic to peek into such intimate activities. Actually, this story could stand beautifully with a fade out scene like the movies and television used to do instead of pages and pages of graphic "stuff". At least there was only one of these, so you won't miss much of the story if you're a page flipper, too.
I love regency romances, but I didn't like this one as much as I thought I would. I typically enjoy stories where the heroine outranks the hero. In this case, the heroine was likable but too meek for me throughout the book. The hero was great but the author never really let us get close to him. They had ok chemistry. The storyline had a major flaw at the end with respect to the hero having his birth legitimized after his parents' marriage was annulled. The bright spot was Juliet and Thayne. I hope to read their story someday!
Both the heroine and hero were extremely likable. Jack and Lilah make a beautiful couple. The ending was a bit anticlimactic. I hoped for something more dramatic, but even without that, I loved the story.

Lilah Appleton is stuck between a rock and a hard place. She needs to marry a man with a title or she will be forced to marry her cousin according to her father’s will, if she does not want to me disowned by her mother. Lilah has thus far been overlooked by the men of the ton because of her understated beauty. Jack Marlowe is different. He notices her. He listens to her. As he comes to know more of Lilah’s situation, he offers his help. In the process, he falls in love with her and she with him. The problem is, is that Jack Marlowe is known to be the bastard son of an earl, so is therefore untitled. They fight their feelings but in the end, they declare their love to each other and consummate it. Jack wants to marry Lilah. And she wants to marry him. They are willing to brave the elements if they do. In the end, Jack was actually conceived while his father and mother were married, so he does have the title that will fulfill the terms of the codicil. They live happily ever after.

I loved the story. Even without a known title, Jack was a powerful man who took charge of his own life. Lilah found the strength to fight for what would truly make her happy. I have reread this book several times, and will only add to that number.
There are some couples in stories that you like and a rare one that you love. I loved this pair. He is a self made man, bastard son of an Earl. She is the daughter of a Baron, on her third season, and faces marriage to a lascivious cousin if she doesn't find a titled husband by the end of the season. She has been ignored from day one of her debut, no one EVER remembers her name, she's never been courted. The H/h meet on the street, in the company of friends, and he notices her. The next day he brings her flowers, and the game is on. He is not the marrying kind, so he thinks, but he remembers everything she says and does. She finds him infuriating, yet intriguing. He can't resist any chance to infuriate her. The conversations are witty and the characters dynamic. I will continue this series.
I'm a SUCKER for a possessive hero. When the title shows possessiveness, it's always going to draw me in. The Debutante is Mine was a sweet little treat that ticked a lot of my favourite qualities in historical romance. I don't think I've read many historical romance stories by this publisher, but I'm now tempted to try a few more. Avon tends to release compact versions of my favourite tropes packed into a little package. I think these shorter reads appeal to me because of my limited time for reading. I started and finished this book today and concluded with a big smile on my face.

The characters were interesting, the storyline kept my attention from start to finish and there was plenty of sizzling chemistry between the hero and heroine to keep my heart pumping. A little angst to bring the story to life but not too much that had me running for the hills.

Confession...Yes, the title drew me in, but the price was the deciding factor. Historical romances tend to be on the pricey side so I have to be fully convinced that it will be worth my hard earned dollars. The Debutante is Mine was affordable, quick to read and left me satisfied. Definitely a win for me.
