I've watched the anime a long time back and decided on reading the manga. The first volume itself for the price is a solid entry. It sets up the yoma, the mystery of the "silver-eyed witches" without overtly diving into what the organization Clare is involved with.Since it is the first volume of the series, I assume Norihiro was still inexperienced at the time. The reason why is even though Clare herself and the design of the world which the story takes place is great, there were art tidbits that kind were kind of hard to overlook. One prominently was the lack of stratification with background characters who most of the time looked identical. I think the Yoma themselves suffered from this because at times it was hard to differentiate between them as they aesthetically didn't have too many defining features. The second was that there were a lot of panels of which I thought could have had more background in them.
Besides that, I think the last chapter should have finished as a cliffhanger to entice readers to purchase the second volume instead as a somber note. The combat sequences were well drawn and easy to follow. I know the series is great because of the anime, but I think the first volume could have been a lot more stronger compared to the entries of other manga.

I've already read this series basically online, scanlated, However, this series is so good, it's deserving of being physically bought. Although not exceedingly original it does well with what it has and makes what could be a bad series, into a series every manga fan should read. SO buy it if you want action but if you want comedy or romance then don't buy it.
I have had a lifetime interest in numerous Japanese martial arts (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Kendo, Kenjutsu, Tanto-jutsu) in my more than 60 years of training both as a student and an instructor. I have also enjoyed the many Japanese graphic novels, which they call "Manga." The Lone Wolf with Cub series has been one of my favorite series over the years.
I just began reading this series (Claymore #1 Shonen Jump Advanced) by Norihird Yagi. In previous Manga material the book was organized and printed the American way with left to right; however, this series is published in the original Japanese way which is from right to left reading. At first it was a little challenging to get used to, but after a short while it was easy to read in this format. As for the story, I really liked it a lot. I am also glad that I began with volume #1 in order to understand the characters.
This series centers around warriors called Claymores because of the large English sword they carry. The story begins when Clare (who is a Claymore) is summoned to a small village to kill a monster named Yoma, who lives to kill and eat humans. Claymores are assigned to hunt down these monsters, but there is also a unique twist. The reason the Claymores are so fast and deadly is because they are also half monsters, but are dedicated to helping and saving humans. The illustrations and story keeps you turning the pages.
In conclusion, if you are into the Japanese manga graphic comics you should check out this series. I recommend it. In fact, I am looking forward to reading volume 2, and 3 which I also purchased.
Rating 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author The Samurai Soul An old warrior's poetic tribute).
I enjoy the claymore series cause the series has strong people dealing with horror. They face that horror with skill and thinking that helps them survive.
This is a pretty well put together manga. But I watched the anime first a few years ago and I must say I prefer the anime to the manga in this particular case. Either way though, if you want a great story with strong female characters and monster slaying, then this book is for you.
Manga takes on European fantasy are always interesting in that they tend to be really creatively culturally blended, Norihiro Yagai's invention of the Yoma and the half-Yoma, "Claymores," named for their ability wield gigantic swords. Clare's travels and friendship with Raki drive this first volume and parts of it are touching. It's full of genre tropes that often bother me, but the twists and simplicity of the beginnings of the story telling keeps me invested.
So.... If to a strong start. Clare's interesting enough and I don't trust the Organization she's working for.... They're in the business of creating humanoid abominations (namely, the Claymore themselves), and I strongly suspect they might be behind the yoma. Barring that they know who and why the yoma are being created and unleashed like this.
Excellent book with a interesting main character and premise. I got into this by chance after it was recommended to me. I love books like Conan the barbarian and berserk so this is right up my alley. I love the art work as well and am a big fan of black and white comic books. I used to love the large black and white Conan comic books they did years ago. I really can not think of any thing I did not like about this issue and would recommend this book to pretty much any one who likes strong female characters and good entertainment.
It might not be for every one as it is somewhat violent .people do get killed and eaten by yoma and there is plenty of blood and sword play. Some squeamish people might not like it and perhaps some over protective parents may nit want their kids reading it. Other wise it is an excellent book that many would enjoy.
