The Republic of Love Carol Shields Books

It was pretty good. Way too much prelude and angst until the actual meeting of the two main characters. Then suddenly everything got fast tracked. I resented all the time I had to spend to get to the relationship only to have the book end so suddenly. But I was ready to stop reading it!

The Republic of Love Carol Shields Books Reviews

I first read this book years ago and was delighted to rediscover. It is a most enjoyable novel of manners which explores the varying manifestations and timelines of love. The protagonists--she a folklorist and expert on mermaids--and he a late-night disc jockey---are both interesting. This book has inspired me to reread other books by Carol Shields.
This is a story to root for! I could feel myself trying to tell the main characters things I thought they needed to know! I give it four stars because sometimes the story didn't "flow" for me.
I really enjoyed this book. Carol Shields was a wonderful, insightful writer. This book is beautifully written and very cleverly structured. One is tempted to call it light, but it really does touch on the loadstone of human longing for love and companionship. I recommend it heartily.
Loved this book. I got really in to the characters. Very literary; was mostly about the characters' inner lives. Would recommend to readers of literary fiction. I save 5 stars for my most favorite books, but this one was very good!
Tom Avery, a forty-year old thrice-married late night DJ in Winnipeg and Fay McCloud, a thirty-five year old academic specializing in the mythology of mermaids who has had serial relationships but never married, fall in love.

It’s complicated. The age, the marriage history, the academic world, the opinions and advice of family and friends all contribute to the complications. And then Fay’s father, in a seemingly perfect marriage for 40 years decides to leave his wife.

It is a well told story and one of the interesting devices Shields uses is to employ dialogue in a narrative fashion. An event happens and then we hear from a flock of Tom or Fay’s friends and families. It’s not back and forth dialogue – it’s more like listening to someone’s voice message messages or overhearing someone talk on the phone. You only get half the conversation, but it’s is still clear what’s being said.

Engaging story.
"What a complicated web we weave." That line invaded my mind throughout most of this reading. It was an interesting story, but I did do some skipping over after I was about halfway into it. Lots of well written characters.
This is a well written tale about about love, and its complications. Everyone's expectations are different, and
this story follows the lives of two people looking for love. I enjoyed the book a lot, it kept me waiting for the
next move and was true to its story line to the end.
It was pretty good. Way too much prelude and angst until the actual meeting of the two main characters. Then suddenly everything got fast tracked. I resented all the time I had to spend to get to the relationship only to have the book end so suddenly. But I was ready to stop reading it!
