At the rate Ruth Logan Herne is going, the public is going to start looking for Lake Kirkwood in upper state New York! This fifth book, in the author's Kirkwood Lake series, may be the most intriguing of them all. (I've read them all.) The heroine, Tina, is about as feisty as any heroine could be and still remain sympathetic to the reader. The hero, Max, is an ultra alpha military hero who goes on missions similar to SEAL Team 6. These are the kind of black-op risky missions that often end in death and failure. And yet, Max, is as tender to those he loves as he is fierce to those he is sent to destroy. He is both ideal hero and husband material.

As the story opens Max's father is dying. So after over a decade away Max is returning to Kirkwood to help the family business survive. Tina also has major problems. She has just had her life's work, a lakeside restaurant, destroyed by fire. Tina is distraught and in no mood to be romanced by an old flame who could not wait to leave town and her the first chance he got -- which was ten years ago.

However, Max is at long last ready to settle down, find a wife, and start a family. Tina wants only to get away and start life anew - well away from the sadness that now envelopes the area. No way is Tina going to allow Max to break her heart again.

Max wants Tina for a wife and he sees her as another mission to accomplish. He lets her know he wants to marry her right up front. This knocks Tina off balance but she still sees Max as another ill fated lover she must avoid at all costs. This asymmetric love relationship creates a good deal more sparks than a symmetrical romance would likely cause. That's where both the hero and heroine are not sure if they want to commit.

There is also enough excitement outside of the romance to keep the story interesting. I've read all the author's books and I believe she gets better with each new book. Ruth Logan Herne seems to be always trying to make each book more challenging than the last one. This makes reading her books (as each new one comes out) highly rewarding. As much fun as the book was to read, I am now anxiously awaiting the author's next book in the series. What will she do next? I don't know but I bet it is going to be really good.

A very nice story!
Ruth Logan Herne does it again. Her stories hit me right in the soul.
This is book 5 so read it. Fun, relaxing reading. Great bedtime stories
Loved this book. Ruth Logan Herne is absolutely brilliant. Big picture...great great story. The details I want to slow down and savor because of the gift of wise, funny, insightful dialogue. But then I need to read FASTER to see how it all works out. Terrific way to write a book!
Tina lost her family and her business. She had been betrayed by two men in the past. It took s lot of courting, but max wasn't about to give up.
This may be my favorite Kirkwood Lake book yet!

Let me start off by saying if your just looking for a sweet, magical Christmas story, this is not for you. This was heart-wrenching at times. There was a point in this book when a two word declaration just sent me to tears! There is a wonderful sub-plot - sad, but reality of life - that I cannot even discuss because I just don't want to give anything dramatic away. It's a total surprise, especially if you've been reading these in order. I guarantee it's a kleenex book!

In this story, we get to meet another Campbell - Max. He's one of seven children, and he ran away from Kirkwood after a terrible tragedy - feeling that he's guilty for not preventing the deaths from happening. But Tina loved him, and her heart was broken when he left. Max is back ready to take on his role in the hardware store.

For the first forty percent of this book, I wasn't too interested in it and actually walked away from the book. But things really got good - really fast and I just wanted to read it in one sitting - and did!
