Bertalan de Nemethy was coach of the US Equestrian Show Jumping Team for 25 years. His approaches work. This book is an invaluable guide for anyone who wants to know how to start a horse in jumping training and get good results. But it is far more than that. In less than 170 pages de Nemethy explains how to sit a horse correctly - and why - how to work the horse in the various gaits, how to start a young horse so that he will be supple and balanced, how to do ground work, and how to start and work successfully with a young or a more experienced horse over jumps. Many more pages have been written on all of these subjects, but de Nemethy manages to say it all clearly and briefly. The key to ones success in using this book is that it contains numerous wonderful photographs as well as diagrams and exact information on what exercises to use, what distances and heights to work with, and how the horse is likely to react to each phase of the schooling. Every element in the experience of the horse and rider is detailed and explained. It is a shame, for both riders and horses, that this book is not available at a reasonable price; in the last month I have advised three people to buy it, and I can think of several more whom I would give it to, if the base price were not upwards of $300! Thank goodness I had the sense to buy it when I did!
This is the best book I have ever read on teaching young horses (and not so young) to jump, and even fix some that have been damaged by bad training. The exercises are so clear and straightforward, if your horse has any aptitude or willingness to jump, you will make him a confident partner who can make this sport as safe as it can be. Having used its methods for the 25 years I've been teaching and training, i will never let it go. I might even want to buy another just in case something happens to my copy (like my daughter snags it). I love the myriad of exercises he has in the back that give you weeks of new games to play with your horse and students, and keep the learning fresh. Fabulous book by a great horseman.
An amazing man and method! Helpful to anyone, but mainly for over fence work. Glad to have this book in my arsenal finally!

I highly reccomend this book to any rider looking to study from one of the "masters of old"! DeNemethy trained some of our modern day greats and is admired by them, there is a reason!

I just received the book. I've heard professional equestrians rave about it so I spent the $40 for it which I thought was a lot from the beginning. I expected a big hardcover book with amazing quality papear and pictures for this price. I was dismayed that it's a regular sized paperback with cheap papear and black and white drawings.
The information will be amazing I'm sure but for $40 a book should have more than useful information. After all books are not just words, they are visual and textural treasures.
